The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem Responds to COVID-19

The coronavirus emergency is affecting every one of us. Businesses are temporarily shuttered, workers sit idle, "self-quarantine" has become a national catchphrase. In this time of uncertainty and fear about what is to come, know this, The Salvation Army is here. Our services to the most vulnerable in the Winston-Salem community are open. We are working every day to fulfill our mission to meet human need without discrimination, in His name. In the interest of the health and safety of those we serve, our staff, and officers, we have made adjustments to our services.

The first order of business is extreme cleaning and disinfecting at all our locations, which will be a continuing process. Also, the following steps are being taken to reduce physical contact in order to slow the spread of disease.

  1. The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs are closed at both locations, following the lead of the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools system.
  2. All volunteer activities have been suspended.
  3. Residents of The Salvation Army Center of Hope Family Shelter are being encouraged to remain in the shelter unless going to work or doctor's appointments.
  4. Our daily Community Breakfast and Sunday Dinner are now being served "take out" style at the front door to the Center of Hope. This will keep contact with staff and shelter residents to a minimum.
  5. Our food pantries in Winston-Salem and Kernersville are both open regular hours but the "client choice" method of shopping for food has been suspended while the emergency continues. Food boxes are being delivered to clients at the pantry door and loaded into vehicles for clients who need assistance.
  6. The Salvation Army Family Thrift Store is continuing pickups of donations but staff will not enter donor homes. If you wish to make a donation, please leave it on your porch, driveway, front yard, etc.

We are prepared to keep Doing The Most Good but your assistance is critical.
