Dates set for Christmas Cheer Program Registration at SAWC

The Salvation Army of Wake County will continue to serve as a blessing to the community through its annual Christmas Cheer Program, which will begin registration for families in need starting Monday, Oct. 28 through Friday, November 1, from 9 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m. Additional registration hours will take place on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30 from 4–8 p.m.

This year, registration and distribution will take place at a new location, 2728 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27604. In the previous two years, distribution has taken place at the old Sears Building at Cary Towne Center.

Last year over 8,000 children were registered for the Christmas Cheer Program, which enables children to have brand new toys, stockings, and clothing on Christmas morning.

To sign up clients must bring:

1. Picture ID (The person must be the parent or have proof they are the legal guardian for the children)

2. Proof of income for everyone in household

3. One ID for each child being registered that shows the child’s date of birth. (Current Medicaid card, birth certificate, shot record or school record.) This can also be proof that the person registering is the parent or legal guardian

4. Proof of current Wake County address, if different from the person’s picture ID address. 5. They will need to know clothing and shoe sizes for each child.

Children should not be present at the registration and may only be signed up for The Salvation Army Angel Tree/Toy Shop program if not registered for Christmas assistance from another agency.

Each year, thousands of families in Wake County are unable to provide Christmas gifts for their children. These parents work hard and find ways to make ends meet, but Christmas gifts under the tree is out of their reach financially.

Volunteers are also needed each day starting on October 28 through November 1 to get all of the families registered. Volunteers will interview clients and put their personal data into computers. Bilingual skills, and computer skills are especially needed, but not required. The day is broken into two shifts: 8:30am-12:30 p.m. and 12:00-5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30 from 3:30-9:00 p.m.

There is also and all day shift from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
