The work of The Salvation Army has always been focused on nourishing the spirits and the bodies of those whom we have the privilege to serve. Our founder, General William Booth, once observed, “You cannot warm the hearts of people with God’s love if they have an empty stomach and cold feet.” This holistic approach is fundamental to our service.

Among the people in our community that we interact with every day are those who are most vulnerable to the effects of illnesses like COVID-19. Often those with whom we work have limited access to resources such as health care or personal protective equipment (PPE). Throughout the past year, we have taken seriously the need to modify our approaches while continuing to serve those who need us.

Like you, we are hopeful for the day when these precautions are no longer necessary. Until then, we will continue to do all that we can to serve compassionately and safely.

Charlyn's Story

Charlyn moved to another city after accepting a job offer. She and her young daughter packed up their house and moved to start a new life. After securing a place to live, she soon found out that the job she accepted was no longer available.

“Boom, everything just fell in that one day.”

As she was desperately trying to find a job, she and her daughter began moving from one friend’s couch to another. Pretty soon her savings were exhausted, and she could no longer pay for necessities for her and her daughter.

Desperate, Charlyn met with a social worker that told her about a new program offered at The Salvation Army called The Pathway of Hope.

“The Pathway of Hope is a program that is national across the Salvation Army. It is focused on breaking the cycle of generational poverty. It’s innovative with integrating The Salvation Army corps within the social services,” said a Pathway of Hope Coordinator.

The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope initiative provides individualized services to families with children who desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and vulnerability. It seeks to address the root causes of poverty in addition to The Army’s history of compassionate serving. By helping families overcome challenges like unemployment, unstable housing, and lack of education, the program helps lead families down a path toward increased stability and, ultimately, self-sufficiency.

“I just feel like I am able to gain a spiritual sense and I am also able to gain assistance with just everyday life and that’s important because all of those are a dynamic of a whole person. So, when you can put all of that together and maintain it’s better because you don’t to go to thirty places. It’s all in one place,” said Charlyn.

Charlyn has renewed hope today because of the program. She has her own place for her and her daughter, a full-time job, and she is about to graduate from college. She has beautiful start to new life.

“Every dollar that has been spent in my regard I could not tell how much that actually means to me. And I thank you all so much, I really do. Pathway of Hope, it gives you hope.”
