PRAISE & WORSHIP
WHAT IS PRAISE & WORSHIP?
Praise & Worship refers to music sung and played in church with the intention of bringing people into the presence of God. The band usually involves guitars, pianos, keyboards/synthesizers, and vocalists. Sometimes other sounds and/or instruments may make up the ensemble.
But Praise and Worship is more than just singing songs in church - it's a lifestyle of love that comes from the heart. 'Praise' in the original Greek means to sing, to tell of, to give, or to confess. In simpler terms it means to be thankful for the blessings God gives and to celebrate who God, sharing it with others. 'Worship' in the original Greek and Hebrew, means to bow down, prostrate one's self in reverence, fall face down in homage and respect. It is the highest form of honor and respect that we can show God.
Through our music we are setting the foundation of how we can live our life. Worship of God and Him alone must be our first priority. Then through our worship and the intimacy that comes from such worship, praise for Him and what He has done will flow naturally. And as we sing about who God is and what He has done for us, we create an atmosphere for people to be responsive and receptive to His spirit.
CCLI, LICENSING & SONGSELECT FAQS
Below you can find the answers to our most frequently asked questions regarding Praise & Worship and the legal rights to sing/play/use/stream songs in church. If you have a question that is not answered below, please reach out to Caitlin Jackson.
WHAT IS CCLI?
Christian Copyright License International is an organization that makes copyright easy. CCLI provides access to licensed, legal Christian music and media while ensuring all access/use has the correct copyright permissions. They also created Songselect, which is an online database of Christian music providing you with access to sheet music, chord charts, and resources to help you plan your praise & worship setlist.
WHAT IS COPYRIGHT, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Copyright allows creators to charge anyone who wishes to copy, perform, or record their work for any commercial or non-commercial use, and allows the creator to protect their work from any change which might be considered offensive or not in keeping with their wishes. Copyright owners should be fairly compensated for the copying of their works. Understanding the many copyright issues related to music is complicated. Moreover, the law is confusing. For churches, schools or organizations, a seemingly honest error or omission can be embarrassing, time-consuming, and costly. At the same time, the law seeks fairness and protection for all parties.
WHAT IS A CCLI LICENSE?
The CCLI License helps you honor copyright law and the creative people who author these valuable works. With the CCLI Church Copyright License your corps can be legally covered. There are 3 different types of licenses that grant you different permissions. Let's break them down.
1. The CCLI CHURCH COPYRIGHT LICENSE is an annual license that covers the following activities:
- Storing lyrics
- Printing songs
- Making custom arrangements
- Projection or display
- Translating songs
- Recording services (NOTE: this does NOT include streaming/uploading your services to Facebook, Youtube or any other streaming platform. You will need the additional Streaming License to have permission to do this).
2. The CCLI REHEARSAL LICENSE is an additional annual license that enables duplication and sharing of commercial audio recordings when sharing via email, external drives or with worship planning software and sites. This includes:
- Sharing digital downloads
- Leveraging planning software
3. The CCLI STREAMING LICENSE is another additional annual license designed to enable streaming or podcasting of recorded worship services. The Streaming License provides coverage for every one of the 500,000 songs covered under the CCLI Church Copyright License. This license includes:
- Stream or podcast your services
DO I EVEN HAVE A CCLI LICENSE? HOW DO I FIND OUT MY CORPS CCLI NUMBER?
Every Salvation Army corps in the division has their own CCLI Copyright License, which gives you all the permissions listed above under CCLI Copyright License. Jennifer Goude has access to all the corps CCLI information. Please contact her with any concerns/requests regarding your corps CCLI.
WE HAVE A CCLI COPYRIGHT LICENSE - DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN STREAM OUR SERVICES ON FACEBOOK/YOUTUBE?
While every corps has a CCLI Copyright License, that does not give you permission to stream your praise and worship on Facebook, Youtube or any other streaming platform. You will need to purchase an additional Streaming License in order to have the correct coverage. You can find out more information on the streaming license and costs here.
WHERE CAN I FIND CCLI SONGS TO USE IN MY SETLIST?
Great question! CCLI have developed an online database called Songselect, which has over 500,000 CCLI approved Christian songs. Here you can find lead sheets, chord charts and lyrics to almost any worship song, ranging from the top 100 current worship songs to traditional hymns. A free account allows access to all SongSelect features, but you are limited to non-copyrighted songs within the public domain. However, with your CCLI number you can create an Advanced or Premium account which allows you to download any music in any key. An advanced or premium account does come at an additional cost on top of your CCLI license, however it is one of the most valuable resources to invest in for your corps praise & worship team. You can find out more about pricing and the different account types here.
