Get Off the Wheel: Let’s Do Something Together

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 (NIV)

I’ve spent most of my life trying to find love by serving my own desires. Trying to feel content within myself. Trying to find peace on my own.

I had a constant struggle to fill a void within myself. I thought I loved others, but in truth, I was serving myself and became frustrated when others seemed to get in my way. Like a hamster on a wheel, I kept running in circles, trying to find peace on my own. No matter what I accomplished, it was never enough. I just kept spinning on and on.

What I didn’t understand then was that I am created to love God and to love others. We all need Christ, and we all need others. In this truth, real love is valuing someone outside of myself and doing something about it. While I didn’t understand that before, I do now and have found peace within myself by loving God and serving others.

At The Salvation Army of Pickens County, we want to provide opportunities for our community to serve others (take action). In doing so, we claim God’s promise of increasing His joy within each of us.

As we head into the 2019 Christmas season, we want to begin sharing opportunities for you to connect with us and help us serve others. The Christmas season is a time of sharing the hope found in Christ: an eternal hope in victory and salvation.

What does serving others look like in September as we prepare for the Christmas season? We ask that you begin sharing opportunities to serve with The Salvation Army at Christmastime this year. Please contact us if you need a special speaker for your civic organization, Sunday School class, work team, etc. Please help distribute volunteer packets that provide details of how to get involved. Please contact us now if you’d like to ring bells or help at the Toy Shop so we can schedule you early. Please contact us now to sponsor an Angel Tree location, a toy/clothing drive and more.

Our goal is to reach many folks and provide a joyful experience for many children this Christmas, giving hope. We need you to engage with us now so we can begin early planning and make the most difference working together.

Please review our 2019 Christmas Volunteer packet here. This packet lists our volunteer opportunities and corresponding contact information for these opportunities. Please share this link and details with your contacts. We need to get this out to as many people as possible!

Please consider the following volunteer opportunities:

  • Coordinate a team to cover a Red Kettle location for a day (8 hours)
  • Volunteering as an individual at a Red Kettle location for a minimum of 3 hours
  • Help put Angel Tree bags together from a child’s wish list at our Toy Shop
  • Help distribute gifts to the parents of our Angel Tree children on our Christmas Distribution Day
  • Volunteer your high-traffic business as an Angel Tree location
  • Contact us to schedule a speaker at your civic organization, Sunday School class, etc.
  • Sponsor a toy/clothing drive at your place of business, Sunday School class, etc.

By volunteering in one or more of the roles described above, you will make a difference in the lives of others. But engaging in this process will also touch your heart in a way no other opportunity can. To feel the love of Christ within your heart and swelling up! Please join us early. Get involved in making a difference for others and for yourself. To God be the glory!
