The value of a volunteer hour is a whopping $24.14. When you volunteer with us, you are supporting us not only with your service, but you are helping us reserve funds for programs that Do The Most Good in our community.

Volunteer Guidelines

The Corps

Free Food Friday

Every Friday (9AM-2PM), volunteers are welcome to come to The Salvation Army to help serve/give away free food that has been donated by generous community partners. Frozen meats, canned goods, pet food, and more are given out. Volunteers assist with setup, helping clients select foods, restocking, and cleanup. The program begins at approximately 10am and usually ends by 1pm, or earlier if the food runs out.

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Durham

After-School Program

The Club provides after school care (Monday-Friday, 2:30PM-6:00PM) on a daily basis. Volunteers can join in these efforts by tutoring children who need some extra help with homework and test prep, literacy efforts, mentorship, athletics, and more. Volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background check and complete a mandatory Safe From Harm training prior to serving.

Summer Day Camp

Summer Camp (Monday-Friday, 7:30AM-5:30PM) is our community day camp! Each day is filled with activities that are sure to keep our Club kids busy, and safe. From fishing, swimming, day field trips, and more, summer camp provides these inner-city youths with opportunities they may not have otherwise. The best part? It only costs them $35 a week! Volunteer with summer camp and help run our daily programs.

Community Service

Court-Ordered Community Service

Community service hours can be obtained at The Salvation Army of Durham. We work alongside clients and court systems to ensure that the hours are properly documented. Community service workers must supply an official document stating the number of hours needed and the specific charge. Please note that we do not accept larceny charges at this time.
