Christmas Angel Tree
There are so many ways to get involved with our Angel Tree program. Volunteers help by registering families for assistance, helping label the "Angels" before we send them off to sponsors, setting up our Toy Shop where we house all of the donated gifts, and distributing the gifts to our registered families.
Red Kettle Ringing
Your organization can ring bells at one of our 30+ locations around Durham, Orange, and Person counties. Dance, sing, perform, and ring the bell! You will not only raise money for the programs that serve our community, but you will help us to save money as well. For every kettle stand that is unmanned by a volunteer, we have to staff that location with a paid employee. Your volunteerism allows us to put more funding toward programs that help. 1 volunteer hour = $24.14 saved.
Free Food Friday
Every Friday (7:30AM-11:30AM), volunteers are welcome to come to The Salvation Army to help serve/give away free food that has been donated by a generous community partner. Frozen meats, canned goods, pet food, and more are given out. Volunteers assist with setup, helping clients select foods, restocking, and cleanup. The program begins at approximately 9:00am and usually ends by 11:00am, or earlier if the food runs out.
The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Durham
The Club provides after school care (Monday-Friday, 3:00PM-6:00PM) for over 100 children on a daily basis. Volunteers can join in these efforts by tutoring children who need some extra help with homework and test prep, literacy efforts, mentorship, athletics, and more. Volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background check and complete a mandatory Safe From Harm training prior to serving.
Summer Day Camp
Summer Camp (Monday-Friday, 7:30AM-6:00PM) is our community day camp! Each day is filled with activities that are sure to keep our Club kids busy, and safe. From fishing, swimming, day field trips, and more, summer camp provides these inner-city youths with opportunities they may not have otherwise. The best part? It only costs them $55 a week! Volunteer with summer camp and help run our daily programs!
The Family Thrift Store
Community service hours can be obtained at The Salvation Army of Durham. We work alongside clients and court systems to ensure that the hours are properly documented. Community service workers must supply an official document stating the number of hours needed and the specific charge. Please note that we do not accept larceny charges at this time.
The community benefits greatly from The Family Store (Monday-Saturday, 9:00AM-5:00PM). Donations are sold at a very low price, allowing families who may not be able to shop elsewhere to purchase affordable, good quality clothing. Volunteers help with these efforts by assisting with donation intakes, tagging and pricing items, hanging clothes, and more. Individuals and groups (up to 15) are welcome to serve at The Family Store.
