Did you know?

17.9% of Durham County residents are food insecure. 24.7% of those are children.

18.1% of Person County residents are food insecure. 29.2% of those are children.

14.3% of Orange County residents are food insecure. 26.1% of those are children.

These stats were taken from our friends at Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

We believe that these numbers are much too high. The Salvation Army of Durham is combatting this in several different ways. We are excited to share #FreeFoodFridays with the community, thanks to a partnership that has allowed us to receive thousands of pounds of food each month to give away, completely free, to families in need.

Every Friday we will be giving away free food to anyone who needs it. Things like frozen meat, canned goods, drinks, hygiene products, snacks, and pet food will be available to each household that comes through our doors.

What to bring*:

copy of lease agreement OR

letter from landlord stating your place of residence

When:

Fridays, 9:00am-11:00am (unless food is all given out before 11:00)

Where:

Fellowship Hall of The Salvation Army of Durham; 909 Liberty Street Durham NC 27702

*If you are unable to provide the required documents, please call us in advance to speak with our Social Services team about your situation. (919) 688-7306.

Donate

There are many ways to give back to your community and help with this program. You can donate non-perishable food items and hygiene products by dropping them off at 909 Liberty Street, Durham NC 27701 between 9AM-3PM, Monday-Friday. You can also donate to our online "food pantry" by following this link. The funds help keep our food pantry and Free Food Friday going! Your company, church, or club can also host a food drive to benefit these programs. We will even provide the food barrels for you! Just fill out the food drive form for more information.

Give Hope with us.

The Salvation Army is blessed to be able to offer this service to our community free of charge each week. However, we cannot do it alone. We welcome volunteers to help us each week with food pickups during the week as well as setup/breakdown every Friday. Volunteer shifts for #FreeFoodFriday are 7:30am-11:00am. This includes setup, breakdown, and assisting the clients as they choose the foods they would like. If you are interested in serving with us, please sign up today and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch.
