You may have seen us post about #FreeFoodFridays over the last few months. What is it?!
Every Friday, The Salvation Army of Durham opens up its doors to the community and offers bags, and bags, and bags of free food. Some of the things offered:
- frozen meats
- baked goods
- canned goods/vegetables
- cases of water
- hygiene items
Families and individuals are welcome to come get a bag of food (or more, depending on household size!) at no cost to them. Durham has a food insecurity rate of 17.9%, with 24.7% of those being children. Many of those are trying to make ends meet, and this food program is intended to alleviate some of that stress. Since beginning this program in November, The Salvation Army of Durham has collected and given away over 17,000 pounds of food! This would be impossible without an incredible community partnership with a local Walmart.
So, how can you be a part of this? If you're hoping to come receive food on #FreeFoodFridays:
- Bring a copy of your photo ID and a copy of your lease agreement. This is to ensure that only one representative from each household is receiving food on behalf of their household/family. We want to make sure as many families can benefit from this program as possible. Thank you for understanding! If you are unable to get a copy of either of these or have a question, please contact our Social Services Department (919-313-3382).
- Come to 909 Liberty Street, Durham NC 27701 on Fridays between 9:00am - 11:30am. We suggest arriving early! If the food runs out before 11:30am, the program will end for that day.
Volunteers play a huge role in this program as well. If you are interested in volunteering or serving in any capacity with this program, please reach out! Fill out this volunteer form, or contact our Volunteer Coordinator.
