Who Are We?: Part 1

We want you to know who we are and what we do here at The Salvation Army of Durham. So, to kick of 2016, we are beginning a series of blog posts that explain just that. The first installment of the "Who Are We?" blog series is focused on what we believe to be of upmost importance: the Church. Learn a little bit more about the Church of The Salvation Army, and what we offer here in Durham!

The Salvation Army has been present in Durham since 1910, but actually began in the 1800’s! While many people in the USA recognize The Salvation Army through its work in Social Services, it began with William Booth walking the streets of London preaching the Gospel to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute.

The Salvation Army church was built on the idea that the message of Jesus Christ needed to be brought to the people. Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among Booth’s first converts to Christianity. He preached hope with salvation and discipleship.

Today, we operate under those same values. The Salvation Army of Durham believes in the power of discipleship and Spiritual growth. We aim to meet physical needs without discrimination, and to meet the spiritual needs of Durham, Orange, and Person counties as well. We believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ offers hope to the hopeless, and restoration for the weak. This faith is what drives our Social Services, our Boys & Girls Club, and everything else that we do. We believe we are called to serve.

Our church is located at 909 Liberty Street, Durham NC 27702. We meet throughout the week, and each Sunday, to enjoy community with one another and grow in the Word together. Below is a schedule of our meeting times. If you're interested in learning more about the Church of The Salvation Army of Durham, stop by and join us for one of our services!
