On June 5, 2014, eight children from The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club boarded a bus to make the 15 minute drive from Durham to the Underwriters Laboratories, UL, ResearchTrianglePark location, where they would each be gifted with a brand new bike.
The recipients were chosen based on behavior, merit, academics and attendance. UL coordinated wit Impact for Good, a company based in New York, to determine which organization they wanted to donate bikes to. On this particular day, UL was having a large meeting, which meant there were many employees in town who were from offices all over the world. The morning of June 5, the employees put the bikes together to be delivered to the Club. Little did they know, the eight children would surprise them that afternoon by coming to their office to meet and thank them in person. Each child’s face lit up with excitement when they saw the bike that they were going to be able to call their own. They promptly got on their bikes and began riding around the large office space while the UL employees cheered and took pictures
All of the children shook the UL employees hands and thanked them for giving them bikes and helmets. One child, Jennifer, stood up and thanked the whole group saying, “Thank you so much for the bikes, we love them and we love you.”
