After School Reading Program

We are in need of volunteers for our afternoon reading program, which offers free reading assistance to students in 1st through 5th grade who read below grade level.

The program meets Monday - Friday, 3:30p.m. to 5:30p.m. Volunteer duties will include assisting children with their reading, writing, spelling and other needs as the lead teacher instructs students on reading and writing assignments.

We ask that interested volunteers attend a Reading Program Volunteer Orientation and Training at The Salvation Army, 3024 Farrow Road, Columbia, SC 29203. The meeting will cover a program overview, volunteer and background check, and safety training. Volunteers will need to bring a driver's license or state id and 3 references. Volunteers can plan to commit a minimum of 2 hours per week on a regularly scheduled day per week.

To register for the next upcoming Afternoon Reading Program Volunteer Orientation and Training or for more information, please contact Andrew R. McIntyre at 803-309-0436 or Andrew.McIntyre@uss.salvationarmy.org.
