Celebrating National Boys & Girls Club Week in the Queen City

For more than 75 years, we have celebrated National Boys & Girls Club Week by recognizing the invaluable service Clubs bring to Mecklenburg and Union Counties. We use this week to shine a spotlight on the staff, youth and supporters of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs. Our skilled staff help kids dream big and realize their full potential. Whether they have aspirations of becoming an all-star athlete or an astronaut, Boys & Girls Clubs are a place to become…

On Monday, the Queen City skyline was lit blue by Wells Fargo’s Duke Energy Center.

The rest of the week, we joined the celebration by having “community leader readers” at each of our 8 area Clubs to read to the members:

  • Monday, April 9 – Mayor of Monroe Bobby Kilgore at Monroe Club (Walter Bickett Elementary School, 830 ML King Blvd. S.)
  • Tuesday, April 10 – Jack Tocho from the Minnesota Vikings at Milton Road Club (2901 Milton Road)
  • Tuesday, April 10 – Major Larry Broome from The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte at Dillehay Courts Club (2600 North Pine Street)
  • Wednesday, April 11 – Nike Representatives at Dwight Howard Club at Starmount Academy (1600 Brookdale Ave.)
  • Wednesday, April 11 – Larry Sprinkle from WCNC at Marsh Road Club (940 Marsh Rd.)
  • Wednesday, April 11 – Mayor of Marshville Franklin Deese at East Union Club (East Union Middle School, 6010 Marshville Rd.)
  • Wednesday, April 11 – Toussaint Romain, public defender, at Belmont Ave. Club (901 Belmont Avenue)

“Reading is foundational to the success of our kids, and we also wanted to have an opportunity for our members to interact with local leaders,” said Marty Clary, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte. “This is a fun way for Club members to be inspired, and we think our guests will enjoy the experience as well.”
