Shaq Thompson Visits the Milton Road Boys & Girls Club

Kids at the Milton Road Club got a treat this week, when Carolina Panthers’ linebacker Shaq Thompson paid a visit. He was there for a Champions Reception, a special event for those who have given to the Shaq Thompson’s Sacks for Kids pledge campaign. Prior to meeting guests, he observed a flag football game and gave the kids a few words of inspiration.

Much like the Panthers’ motto, “Keep Pounding,” Shaq encouraged our Club members to keep working hard in school and if you do, you can go on to do big things.

Shaq Thompson is a living example of this.

“My big vision is to help give back to the community, because I came from a community that wasn’t very rich, that didn’t have a lot of money, that wasn’t a good environment to grow up around,” he said.

“I want to be a role model in the community, even if it’s not at home [where I’m from], then somewhere else.”

We are happy that his “somewhere else” is Charlotte and that kids in our area have someone like Shaq to look up to!

All season long, Shaq has led an effort to raise funds and awareness for the local Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs. Shaq Thompson’s Sacks for Kids, sponsored by Salsarita’s, is based on the season-long on-field performance of the team. Each team sack turns into dollars for the local Clubs. Salsarita’s is contributing a portion of burrito combo purchases to the campaign, as well.

“This campaign is a unique way to support youth in your community, and cheer on the home team at the same time,” said Marty Clary, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte. “The funds raised will help us specifically with the Triple Play Get Fit Challenge, a daily program promoting good health and habits among our members.”

There’s still time to get involved. Visit www.pledgeit.org/shaq-thompson to make a pledge.

“This pledge campaign is a great way for fans to join me in this support,” Shaq added. “Now, every time we get a sack, it helps the Panthers and we can help kids stay healthy and active at their The Boys & Girls Clubs!”

Go Panthers!
