The Salvation Army has appointed Majors Larry and Debra Broome as the new Area Commanders for The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte. The new leaders will be responsible for the oversight of Salvation Army programs, services and operations across the greater Charlotte area.
Major Broome is a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina with additional post graduate study in business administration from Capella University. Major Debra Broome was born in Athens, Georgia and attended Columbus College in Columbus, Georgia. Both graduated from The Salvation Army School for Officers’ Training in Atlanta, Georgia and were ordained and commissioned as Salvation Army officers.
Majors Broome have a diverse background in Salvation Army ministry and leadership. They have served as corps officers/pastors at Salvation Army appointments in Statesville, Charlotte, Sumter, and Raleigh in the Carolinas. Those appointments included supervision of social service programs, shelters, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, and thrift stores. The Broomes also served on the faculty of The Salvation Army School for Officer Training; as Area Commander and Director of Women’s Services in Orlando, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia; as Divisional Secretary for the North and South Carolina Division; General Secretary for the Florida Division; and most recently at The Salvation Army Southern Territorial Headquarters in Atlanta where Major Larry Broome was the Legal Secretary and Major Debra Broome was the Assistant Secretary for Women’s Ministries.
Their ministry in Charlotte will include oversight and administration of the social service assistance offices, the Center of Hope – a shelter for women and children, eight Salvation Army Boy’s and Girl’s clubs, William Booth Garden apartments for senior citizens and three corps/church community centers which serve the Charlotte area. Moving to new appointments is a way of life for Salvation Army officers. As dedicated pastors and leaders, Salvation Army officers serve wherever their skills can be best utilized to further the mission of The Salvation Army. “I can’t wait to come alongside you, roll up my sleeves and help advance the mission of The Salvation Army in Charlotte,” stated Major Larry Broome at his first all staff meeting. They realize that the needs of the community can only be met by partnering with donors, employees, volunteers, business leaders, other service providers, and government entities to make a difference one person and one family at a time.
The Broomes have been officers for over 37 years and bring a wealth of experience with them. They are visionary leaders and will help advance the mission of The Salvation Army here in our community. The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte is in excellent hands as we continue to help our neighbors in need.
