After a long day of serving in the Orangeburg area, our canteen crew had stopped at a local Piggly Wiggly grocery store to pick up a donation from the company. While loading supplies a family – a mother and her two daughters – approached our team and indicated that they needed help. Though none of our crew were able to speak Spanish, one of the daughters was able to communicate the families need.
"Our home is out of power. We have no food and our family is hungry. Can we please have some food?"
"We'll be able to feed your family. We have enough there for you."
As our crew continued to talk with the family, we learned that there were other children at home who also needed food. Without hesitation, Captain Wanda Long – one of the local leaders of The Salvation Army – invited the family to meet her at the main office for The Salvation Army in Orangeburg.
"Follow us." She said. "We'll be able to feed your family. We have enough there for you."
Our core mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Even a long day of serving would not prevent us from ensuring that this family had enough to eat.
We are always grateful to our supporters – We are honored and blessed to be able to serve the community in this way. When you choose to give to The Salvation Army during times of disaster, 100% of your resources are used to meet the needs of families just like this one.
