What Your Donations Accomplish . . .
The Salvation Army has served the Winston-Salem area since 1907. During our presence here, we touched the lives of some two million local residents.
Food & Shelter. The Salvation Army operates the only Emergency Shelter for homeless families in Forsyth County at our Center of Hope. In 2012, we helped 560 individuals avoid homelessness and served a hot breakfast 365 days of the year to anyone in need. Nearly 200 men and women took part in our transitional services as they finished their prison terms, rebuilt their lives and reunited with their families.
Emergency Financial Assistance. 15,069 households in Forsyth, Davie, Stokes and Yadkin Counties avoided loss of their utilities and avoided homelessness in 2012.
Christmas Assistance. In 2012, more than 23,800 people in Forsyth, Stokes and Yadkin Counties received assistance, impacting the lives of more than 7,700 local children. Nearly 35,000 toys, 3,500 food boxes, 5,700 coats and more than 4,000 stockings were given to those in need.
Boys & Girls Clubs. The Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club on Reynolds Park Road and The International Boys & Girls Club on New Walkertown Road are home to more than 340 members. A strong focus on academics and success in school helped all of our club members advance to the next grade level. Both sites offer teen and media centers, art and game rooms, gyms and soccer fields.
Summer Camp. More than 450 boys, girls and teens will participate in summer day camp at both club locations. Campers get to enjoy field trips, skating, bowling, and have opportunities to play sports and games, as well as create craft projects. Teachers and certified instructors provide lessons in dance, art, computer training and outdoor sports. Last summer, 28 campers also attended Camp Walter Johnson, the Salvation Army’s overnight camp near Denton, NC.
Academy of Music & Arts. The Salvation Army’s Academy of Music and Arts began in 2003 with 15 students enrolled as part of a summer music camp. Currently in its 10th year, the program offers drama, chorus, music appreciation, piano, guitar and traditional brass and percussion instruments to 35 players. This summer nearly 60 children will participate in eight weeks of intensive instruction.
Family Store. All proceeds from our Family Store, located at 2688 Peters Creek Parkway, remain in the community to assist our neighbors in need. Tax-deductible donations of clothing and household items can be made at our store or at any A Cleaner World. We also accept cars, boats and RVs. To schedule a pick-up, call (336) 723-9552.
Disaster Services. In times of local, regional, and national disasters, The Salvation Army offers services to survivors and rescue workers including food, shelter, emergency communications, and emotional and spiritual care. The Winston-Salem Area Command operates a mobile feeding kitchen capable of providing 1,500 meals a day.
Worship Services in English, Spanish & Korean. Worship services are an integral part of The Salvation Army and are offered at three Corps Community Centers, each offering services in a different language. Visit our website, SalvationArmyWS.org, for locations and schedules
