Providing Water in Kenya
The Carolinas are bringing clean water to 50,000 people.
Water is essential to life.
Often we take it for granted that "the thirsty" can simply turn on the faucet and enjoy a tall, refreshing glass of water. Some of us even opt for bottled water, citing the objectionable after taste of chemicals used to keep our water clean and healthy.
For the nearly one billion people without access to clean drinking water, this is an unimaginable luxury. That is about 1 in 8 people on the planet. That's about 13%.
That's a lot of people.
There are thousands of companies and charities working to literally bring life to those that need water. The Salvation Army, too, is working hard to "Do the Most Good" that we can possibly do to be a part of this solution.
Here in the Carolinas alone, this has taken shape as a component of our "Partners in Mission" project. We have partnered with The Salvation Army Kenya East Territory with the goal of providing clean water to 50,000 people in 14 rural communities.
We will do this by funding and drilling 14 bore holes, shafts drilled deep to find reliable, clean water sources. Already, we have drilled 6 of these 14 holes and have acquired the necessary permits and completed the environmental impact analyses for all 14 locations. We have trained community users to ensure the proper functioning of the wells. We've established water use committees to ensure the ethical and fair use of the water for all of their people.
We are making great progress in providing clean water to these communities. But we also have responded to the drought crises in sub-saharan Africa. The Salvation Army has provided 10 water bowsers to bring water to remote hard hit areas. These bowsers are 7.5 ton trailers designed to be pulled over the roughest terrain by truck or trailer and with a capacity of 5,000 litters (approx. 1,320 gallons).
To help us continue to provide clean water in these area, please support us financially (specify "africa water projects" as specific use) or contact us to learn more.
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar spent is used to carry out those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.
