Pamela Jackson has a full-time job as a kindergarten teacher's assistant in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system. Like many others, Ms.Jackson lives from paycheck to paycheck and worries about how she’s going to pay all of her bills. That’s why she came to The Salvation Army for help this Christmas. Ms. Jackson is part of a growing number of people trying to get by in a tough economy and asking for help from The Salvation Army. In 2011, The Salvation Army, with the help of the community, provided Christmas presents for Ms. Jackson’s 11 year-old daughter, and more than 5,700 other children in Forsyth County. |
Each Christmas, The Salvation Army, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and donors, provides toys, food and clothing for our neighbors in need, and cares for those otherwise forgotten.
In 2011, we served more than 17,200 people in need in the greater Winston-Salem area. Of those served, more than 7,000 were children.
Together you donated 2,600 Angel Tree gifts, filled nearly 3,000 stockings and collected more than 700,000 cans of food. With your help, we distributed more than 20,000 toys, 4,400 coats and close to 3,300 food boxes. More than 4,100 presents were delivered to local facilities such as nursing homes, remembering those who may have otherwise been forgotten.
Some 338 volunteers gave over 3,000 hours of service to make Christmas brighter for those less fortunate.
Our Christmas Programs
Toys and Food
The Salvation Army helps families in Forsyth and Yadkin Counties with food and toys for Christmas.
Angel Tree
Children in need are provided gifts of toys and clothing through the Angel Tree program. Angel sponsors purchase appropriate gifts and return them to the Angel Tree for distribution. This program is an opportunity for an individual to make a difference in the life of a child in need.
Stockings Program
Pick up and fill stockings with small items for children aged 5 through 12 and return them for distribution through The Salvation Army Christmas Program.
Give-a-Kid-A-Coat
In partnership with A Cleaner World, The Salvation Army collects and redistributes coats to children and adults. Volunteers are needed to sort coats and help with the distribution.
Food Boxes
Businesses, Churches and other civic groups select a food item to sponsor for the food boxes that will be distributed to needy families and individuals at Christmas. For more information, and especially if you would like to become a sponsor, contact us at 336 723-6366.
The Sealy/Fox8 Holiday Concert
This Holiday Concert has become a tradition for thousands of Triad families. It is a great opportunity to hear the Winston-Salem Symphony and celebrate the Season, but it also helps stock The Salvation Army pantries and keeps our neighbors in need from going hungry.
