What's Happening, the Summer 2011 Boys and Girls Club Newsletter

Boys and Girls Clubs

Director: Sylvia Adams

In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that, and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs have offered a positive place for kids in Winston-Salem since 1938.  The Clubs provide quality after-school and summer programming designed to enable all young people, especially those most in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The Area Command currently operates Clubs at two sites:

The Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club on Reynolds Park Road is the newest of the facilities and offers 22,000 square feet including a dedicated space for teens, a media center, art room, gym and gameroom, classrooms and a soccer field with a view of downtown Winston-Salem. This Club will have the capacity to service approximately 1,000 members.

The International Boys and Girls Club began in 2003 and has quickly grown to more than 100 members. This Club is located at the International Corps and provides an excellent feeder opportunity to other Corps programs.

Club staff monitor the number of school absences, tutoring and homework help is offered daily, report cards and progress reports are collected from all members, and individual help with End-of-Grade Tests is available.

Currently over 300 children are participating in the after-school program.

Flow Automotive employees contributed to pay for new shoes and the YMCA donated backpacks filled with school supplies.

The biggest surprise of the evening though came when each family got a new Dell desktop computer, donated by Flow Automotive. The event was organized by employees of Flow Automotive.
