The Salvation Army Declares Its Homeless Shelter a Center of Hope

Winston-Salem, N.C. – May 11, 2010 – In celebration of National Salvation Army Week, the local Salvation Army of Winston-Salem is renaming its shelter for the homeless on Trade Street the The Salvation Army Center of Hope.

On Tuesday, May 11th at 11:00 am, a dedication ceremony and reception will be held at 1255 North Trade Street in Winston-Salem.

"The services provided by the volunteers and staff of this facility have always been important," says Major Terry Israel, Area Commander for The Salvation Army. "But with the impact of the economy we have prioritized the basics of food and shelter. Declaring this facility to be a Center of Hope is a good way to send a message of encouragement to those in our community who are hurting."

Since the facility opened in 1992, The Salvation Army has operated the only emergency shelter for homeless families in Winston-Salem. Additionally, emergency financial assistance in the form of utility payments, rent or mortgage assistance and food boxes are offered on-site to those in need.

The Salvation Army will announce a new initiative called Project Welcome Home at the dedication ceremony. Project Welcome Home will provide each single woman or family a basket of "housewarming" goods to help them get settled in their new home. Individuals or groups in the community can get involved by donating items or holding drives to fill these baskets of hope! The first Welcome Home basket will be presented to a client during Tuesday’s dedication ceremony.

The Asbury University Salvation Army Student Fellowship Band and Chorus will be visiting the Triad on the weekend of April 17, 18 and 19, 2010.

The Salvation Army Student Fellowship (SASF) will be hosted by the local Salvation Army Area Command and the Salvation Army's Academy of Music and Arts. The Fellowship consists of a large symphonic brass band and a mixed choir and offers both traditional and contemporary-style arrangements of hymns and songs, in addition to providing distinctive accompaniments for congregational singing. A unique worship arts group called the Timbrel Brigade provides praiseful, choreographed movement accompanied by the brass.

Dr. Ronald Holz, a member of the music department at Asbury College, directs the young people. Also traveling and performing with the band will be Professor Emeritus James Curnow, one of America’s leading composers of wind and brass music.

An evening of recreation, fun and ministry is planned for Friday, April 16, at the Ken Carlson Boys and Girls Club, 2100 Reynolds Park Road, in Winston-Salem, beginning at 7:00pm. This Youth Night will feature games, basketball, volleyball and a short music and drama performance by SASF.

A Festival of Music is planned for Saturday, April 17, 6:30pm at Parkland Magnet High School Theater, 1600 Brewer Road, Winston-Salem. Doors for this event will open at 6:00pm. Performances by The Salvation Army Student Fellowship Band and Chorus, led by Dr. Ronald Holz and James Curnow, composer and guest conductor, are featured. The Winston-Salem Salvation Army’s Academy of Music & Arts Brass Band and Guitar Elective, and combined performances by both bands and massed choir will round out the evening.

Both events are open to the public and admission is free.

The The Salvation Army Student Fellowship will travel to High Point on Sunday morning to participate in the Sunday Service at Wesley Memorial UMC before retuning home.

Asbury University is a Christian Liberal Arts University in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition and is located 20 minutes southwest of Lexington in Wilmore, Kentucky. It encourages students to study, worship and serve together on a campus.
