Boys & Girls Clubs
We currently operate Boys & Girls Clubs at two sites. The Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club on Reynolds Park Road is the newest of these facilities and offers 22,000 square feet including a teen center, a media center, art room, game room, a gym and a soccer field. At this site, 322 children are participating in the after-school program.
The International Boys and Girls Club began in 2003 and has quickly grown to more than 100 members. This Club is located at the International Corps on New Walkertown Road. A new 5,000 square foot multi-purpose building dedicated in June of 2011 serves as an indoor gym, play area and for various other programs for club and church members.
Academy of Music & Arts
The Salvation Army’s Academy of Music and Arts began in 2003 with fifteen students enrolled as part of a summer music camp. Currently in its eighth year, the program offers drama, chorus, and music appreciation, piano, violin and traditional brass & percussion instruments. Aside from acquiring artistic skills, students also learn team-building and citizenship lessons. This past summer 69 students participated in the music conservatory.
Summer Camp
The 2011 Boys & Girls Club summer camps provided its enrollees with a safe, joyful and enriching environment. Some of the activities included skating, bowling and opportunities to play sports and games, learning more about crafts, or just reading.
This past summer, the programs at the Boys and Girls Clubs were more structured and the numbers of children were limited to 280 at the Ken Carlson Center and 118 at the International Club. Teachers and certified instructors provided instruction in dance, art, computer training and outdoor sports. Participants also took exciting field trips.
Campers also attended Camp Walter Johnson near Denton, NC, operated by our North and South Carolina Division.
Thrift Store
The Salvation Army Winston-Salem Area Command maintains a Family Thrift Store in Winston-Salem. All proceeds generated from this store remain in the community to assist our neighbors in need.
Disaster Services
While each disaster creates its own unique circumstances and special needs, we offer several basic services to disaster victims and rescue workers including food service, emergency shelter, emergency communications, donation management and spiritual care.
The Winston-Salem Area Command operates a mobile canteen that stands ready to deploy and is capable of providing 1,500 meals a day.
Worship Services in English, Spanish and Korean
The Salvation Army's founder, William Booth, believed that "you can't speak to a man about his eternal soul when all he can think about is his empty stomach."
We believe in helping people as a practical expression of Christian belief.
Worship services are an integral part of The Salvation Army and the Winston-Salem Area Command maintains three Corps Community Centers, each offering services in a different language.
