Major Paul Egan
Paul, the sixth and last son of Thomas and Rosemary Egan, was born in Ft. Stewart, GA in 1968. His late father served in the Navy during WWII, retired from the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant and worked as a civil service air traffic controller for the US Army and Marine Corps. At age 10, Paul’s family moved to Beaufort, SC, where he hopes to retire in two or three decades.
He started attending church at The Salvation Army when he moved to Beaufort. His mother, whose family was helped out by The Salvation Army when she was a child, would “volunteer” Paul to serve as a bell ringer, visitor to the nursing home and assistant to the thrift store truck driver. What began as a somewhat begrudged service has flourished into a cherished career.
Paul graduated with honors from Battery Creek High School. After working for The Salvation Army in South Carolina for a year, he entered their College for Officers’ Training in Atlanta, GA. In 1990 Paul was ordained and commissioned by The Salvation Army as a Lieutenant and sent to work in Salisbury, Maryland.
In 1991 he married Lt. Karen Dick, whom he met in Atlanta. Together they have commanded The Salvation Army’s corps in the Charleston, WV, Martinsburg, WV, Princeton, WV, Annapolis, MD, Weirton, WV and Frederick, MD. They took command of the Greensboro, NC Salvation Army in July of 2006. The Egans are greatly impressed by the outstanding impact this corps is able to make upon our community. It is an obvious result of the long history of support Greensboro has given The Salvation Army.
They have one child, Bradley, who turns seventeen this summer. He shares Paul’s love of music and entertainment. They both play brass instruments and are quick to tell a joke, do a magic trick or share a laugh.
Paul has been in MENSA, Civitan, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs in various communities. He has participated in numerous bands and small theater groups. He receives great satisfaction through his work with The Salvation Army and especially with young people.
