Volunteers help us 'do the most good'!
Last year, volunteers contributed more than 100,000 hours at The Salvation Army in Durham, Orange, and Person counties. That's 100,000 hours invested in positive change!

From Sept. 6-11, we need volunteers daily from 11-3:30 in the Chapel Hill SteinMart store to receive generous donations of denim clothing. Call Carlene at 688-7306, ext. 107.
You can sign up for our Christmas kettles at www.Register2Ring.org/durham. Other holiday volunteer opportunities are also available. Over the year, we use volunteers in many areas:

Administration
- Receptionist - field phone calls, assist staff, clients and applicants and other clerical duties
- File clerk – organize various office’s files and file room according to Salvation Army record retention policies
- Historian – organize historical materials in consultation with development officer, Corps officer
- Facilities Maintenance - landscaping, mowing and cleaning indoor and outdoor facilities
Adult Day Programs
- Driver - current CDL license to drive bus with clients to outings
- Program Aides - assist with activities and outings
- Cook - cook and serve lunch
- Transportation Aide - ride buses to assist clients to and from vehicle from domicile and center
Boys & Girls Club
- Program Aide - work with children doing their homework, assist in computer lab, doing arts and crafts and other activities
- Tutor - assist students of all ages with school work
- Literacy Tutors – build reading skills in students who have fallen behind. (Some need help at the decoding level; others with comprehension.)
- Arts and crafts project leaders – you bring your project; let the children enjoy.
- Recreation Assistant - work with staff to plan and lead activities
- Education Assistant – work with staff to plan and lead educational activities, especially from BGCA’s Project Learn
Emergency Social Services
- Application Assistant - help clients complete necessary paperwork for public and Salvation Army assistance
- Driver - transport clients to appointments and activities
- Food Pantry - sort food, stock shelves and prepare bags of food for clients

Family Store
- Warehouse Assistant - help sort, hang, and prepare for display donated clothing and merchandise
- Movers – assist truck driver in pickup of furniture and appliances
Finance
- Accounting Assistant - assist with basic accounting functions - data input, filing, etc.
Information Technology
- Help Desk - assist employees with basic troubleshooting, upgrades and other issues as they arise
- Trainer - host sessions for employees and clients to increase software skills
Marketing and Publicity
- Photographer / Videographer – take still and video images of program activities
- Sports photographer / Videographer – take still and video images of sports events.
- Production – produce of brochures, newsletters, short video promotions
- Social Media Specialist – enhance effective presence on Facebook, Twitter, Jumo, other social media
- Web Specialist – enhance effectiveness of web page
Teen Center
- Tutor - assist students of all ages with school work
- Literacy Tutors – build reading skills in students who have fallen behind. (Some need help at the decoding level; others with comprehension.)
- College and career coaches – help students identify possible college and career choices; fill out applications; etc.
- Mentors – ongoing support to individual student
- Villages – ongoing support teams (six families) for individual students at highest risk

Group volunteer opportunities

The Salvation Army has a range of programs supporting people in need in our community. Some of the ways your group can help are:
- Spring cleaners – Do a day of yard work and spring cleaning around the property or inside the office, any time of year
- Fun makers! – Sponsor a theme night for The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, such as a costume party
- Retail / thrift fans – Help sort, organize, and prepare for display donations at our Family Store
- Energy auditors – Conduct an energy audit of our 40-year-old facility. Tell us whether/ how we could save money by upgrading windows, HVAC, etc.
- Painters and repairers – Paint, repair, and do building projects in our offices.
- Kettle painters – Help us prepare for the holiday season by painting our Red Kettles.
- Bell ringers – Bring a team to ring for a day (or more) at the Red Kettle.

- Support Villages – We need ongoing support teams (six families) for individual students at highest risk
You can also volunteer your time by collecting items for youth and families in need. Donated items are distributed to clients at The Salvation Army. We need:
- Food
- Toiletries
- Games
- CDs
- Diapers
- Formula
- School supplies
- Books
- Holiday items

All volunteers working regularly with children receive a background check. So please be patient while we wait for the results. We also ask that young people (under 18) who volunteer be supervised by adults.
