Health and Life Choices
These programs develop young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals, and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.
SMART Moves
The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training) prevention/education program engages Club staff, parents, peer leaders, and members of the community in helping young people learn effective strategies for making positive choices. The program teaches young people ages 6-15 how to say no by involving them in:
- discussion and role-playing,
- practicing resistance and refusal skills,
- developing assertiveness,
- strengthening decision-making skills, and
- analyzing media and peer influence.
The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.
Street SMART
Street SMART counteracts the negative lures of gangs, violence and "street" influences on youth ages 11-13. While building awareness and resistance skills, participants develop the confidence and knowledge to make intelligent choices. Street SMART's three modules teach young people how gangs work and how to resist being recruited, how to recognize and resolve conflicts peacefully and how to become positive peer helpers.
