Women and Children’s Homeless Shelter

A place called “home”

Every day school buses stop at the Center of Hope to bring more than 150 children “home.”

For the sake of these children—more than 1,000 pass through the Center of Hope’s doors each year—the shelter seeks to provide daily stability and a permanent way out of homelessness. As Charlotte’s only 24/7 year-round emergency shelter, the Center of Hope— a 36,000 square-foot facility with 224 beds on-site and 100 beds in satellite locations—routinely operates at capacity. In 2011 it admitted more than 5,710 people, including five women over the age of 85, and welcomed 27 newborns directly from the hospital.

The largest such shelter in the Southeast, the Center of Hope offers a comprehensive program of on site services, including the nation’s only Boys & Girls Club within a homeless shelter.
