THE SALVATION ARMY'S SUPPLIES DWINDLING

Organization Seeks Midsummer Support

As its supplies dwindle, The Aiken Salvation Army is throwing out its net in search of donations to help the needy and the destitute. "We are concerned that we won't be able to help people arriving at our door through the summer," says Aiken Corps Officer Captain Angela Repass "The Salvation Army has always relied on the generosity of local residents to help us do our work, and we are making a special plea at this time for support."

Besides feeding hungry people in its soup kitchens, The Salvation Army provides clothing for the needy, shelter for homeless people and counseling for the sick at heart. And there is always a friendly, compassionate ear at The Salvation Army, where the confused and the injured can pour out their hearts and never have to fear judgment.

Explaining the Corps' current need, Repass points out that "Our holiday donations have long since been depleted, and lately most local citizens have had their minds on their summer vacations.  They're looking for a bit of relief themselves. It's hard to interest them in the plight of the truly needy."

Who are the truly needy?  Among them are hardworking, low-income families whose food budgets stretch to the breaking point in summer, when their children no longer receive federal school lunches.  Others include laid off workers who have run through their savings while seeking new employment. These seasonal visitors to The Salvation Army office swell the ranks of the regulars -- the homeless, chronically unemployed and psychologically damaged who have been receiving food, clothing, shelter and counseling throughout the year.  As a result, "We find all of our supplies running low in the summer," confesses Repass

The Corps is asking for donations from "everyone who cares about the well-being of this community," concludes Repass. Aiken’s  residents' timely help will demonstrate to the needy God's love and support, keeping hope in their hearts and creating a bridge to a better tomorrow."
