Children are our future and for too many of them that future is dark. Since 1934 The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs have brought light to Mecklenburg and Union county youth. Our mission is to enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Our work falls into three strong pillars: character, education, and healthy lifestyles. In a recent survey of Charlotte Club alumni, 57% said the Clubs “saved their lives.” Club alumni have a graduation rate upwards of 90%, markedly higher than the average for inner-city students. It is too early to measure success rates at The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club in Union County, which opened in January 2012; however, another set of numbers speaks to its success. In just 12 months, the Union County Club grew from 25 members to more than 200. Plans are underway to open a second Club there in winter of 2014.
