Learn about The Salvation Army
SA 101 is a series of articles, photos, and other media designed to keep you infomed about The Salvation Army. As an organization, it is quite large. Here you'll be able to learn more about how The Salvation Army operates and some of the aspects of our work that may otherwise go unnoticed.
- William Booth embarked upon his ministerial career in 1852, desiring to win the lost multitudes of England to Christ. He walked the streets of London to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute. Booth abandoned the conventional concept of a church and a pulpit, instead taking his message to the people. His fervor led to disagreement with church leaders in London, who preferred traditional methods. As a result, he withdrew from the church and traveled throughout England, conducting evangelistic meetings. His wife, Catherine, could accurately be called a cofounder of The Salvation Army.
- The General
- "General" is the title given to the international head of The Salvation Army, as elected by a council of Salvation Army leaders from around the world. From "International Headqarters" in London, England the General directs Salvation Army operations and develops international policy for The Salvation Army. The General also travels frequently to the many parts of the world in which The Salvation Army is at work.
